Marilyn Jane Camp
Funeral services for Marilyn Jane Camp, 77, who died February 24, 2008 at the Knoxville Hospital, will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 28, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Union Chapel Cemetery, rural Madison County, Iowa.
Marilyn Jane Camp was born in Clarke County, Iowa and graduated in 1948 from the Patterson High School and then also from Simpson College. She started teaching in rural Madison County in 1949 and retired in 1989 from the Muscatine Public Schools. Following retirement, she moved to Indianola. She enjoyed spending time with her brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces. She loved reading and poetry and was an excellent cook.
She is survived by her brothers, Marion (Becky) Camp of Olympia, WA, Robert Camp of St. Charles and Glenn (Diana) Camp of Antioch, IL; and sisters, Helen Armstrong and Evelyn Camp both of Indianola.
Visitation will be held 5 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 28, at Overton Funeral Home where the family will be present to greet friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Central Iowa, Knoxville Office.
See P. 57 and 58, East Peru History book. She helped make the mattresses in Peru in the 40's. Also, the home M.B. built south of Peru described in the account of the store was the home where she was born.
MRS. MARVIN J. CAMP of St. Charles Dies
Mrs. Marvin J. Camp of St. Charles died at her home there last Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1958, after several months of failing health. She was 50 years of age.
Mrs. Camp was a life-long resident of Madison county. She was the former Madge Edith Travis, daughter of M. B. and Nellie Travis, and was born near Peru on March 30, 1907. She was married at Indianola on Oct. 2, 1929, to Marvin J. Camp. They were parents of nine children, one daughter dying in infancy.
She had united with the Peru Methodist church early in life.
She leaves her husband; eight children, Mrs. Nadine York of Decorah, Mrs. Nellie Mitchell of St. Charles, Marvin Camp, Jr., of the U. S. Naval base at Norfolk, Va., and Sharon, Reva, David, James and Jack Camp, all at home. She also leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Travis of Winterset, three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Simmons of Selah, Wash., and Mrs. Wilma Carter of Winterset; and three brothers, Joe Travis of Golden Colo., Earl Travis of Shellsburg, and Wendell Travis of Cedar Rapids, and her grandfather, Henry Hoover of St. Charles.

St. Sgt. James D. Camp, 21, of Winterset was reported killed in action in Vietnam on Tuesday, Feb. 4, according to word received here by his family.
Sergeant Camp died of wounds received while defending his camp against a night attack by the enemy. He had been in Vietnam since last Oct. 28.
Sergeant Camp is the firth Madison county fatality of the Vietnamese war.
He was a son of Marvin J. and the late Edith Camp of Winterset. His mother died a number of years ago. He graduated from Winterset High School with the class of 1965, and attended the state University of Iowa in Iowa City before entering the U.S. Army in November 1967.
In additon to his father, he is survived by four sister, Reva Camp, Mrs. Sharon Sheumaker of Des Moines, Mrs. Nellie Mitchell of Loveland, Colo., and Mrs. Nadine York of North Liberty; and three brothers, Marvin (Jerry) Camp of Cedar Rapids, David Camp of Iowa City and Jack Camp of Winterset.
He was engaged to marry Patricia Stephenson of Peru.
The body of the young soldier is expected to arrive here this Wednesday night. Funeral services will be held this Friday at 1 p.m. from the First United Methodist church of Winterset. Burial will be made in Union cemetery in Clarke county.
